The Flotation Tank
The Flotation Tank was developed by Dr. John C. Lilly in 1954. The Flotation Tank is a light proof, sound proof, insulated chamber that is regulated near human body temperature. The most profound feature of the Flotation Tank, is a dense water and Epsom salt solution, allowing one to lie on their back and float effortlessly on the surface of the water. The Flotation Tank is commonly used for deep relaxation, restoration, meditation, and the exploration of internal/alternate realities.
In the Flotation Tank, one's body is relieved from the constant pressure and tension of gravity. One's mind no longer has to process external light, sound, gravity or the regulation of temperature. Up to 90% of neural resources are freed. This vast amount of energy is projected inwards. As a result, people often report having clear visions, Lucid Dreams and instantly entering deep meditative states, such as the loss of the self.
When one dreams, the processes of the brain make it extremely difficult for one to clearly remember or to consciously take part in the experiences that take place. This is because of the various shifts in the Delta and REM stages of sleep. In the flotation tank, sensory input is reduced by the physical environment, allowing one to enter a dream-like Theta state, in between sleep and wakefulness. In this conscious, dream-like state, one can explore the inner realms at a higher level of awareness, making it easier for one to clearly remember and consciously take part in their dream-like visions.
It is through the conscious exploration of these dreams and visions that inner piece and archetypal reflections can be found. As one sheds their self construct, universal threads of truth and feelings of wholeness can fill one with the blissful interconnectedness of all things…
